The verse challenges other gods to predict the future, implying that God's unique ability to "call, declare, and set in order" future events is the ultimate proof of His divinity. This ability is linked to His establishment of Israel as His "ancient people," highlighting that God's relationship with His chosen ones is interwoven with His foreknowledge and control over history.
Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen. Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage is part of God's response to Israel's idolatry and spiritual unfaithfulness. He has been patiently recounting their history and reminding them of His steadfast love and power. Following a vivid critique of idol worship, God challenges the gods of the nations, asserting His unique ability to foretell and orchestrate future events as proof of His divinity. He then contrasts this divine foresight with the futility of idols, ultimately turning back to assure Israel of His protective presence and promises.
Have you ever wondered how someone knows what's going to happen next? Isaiah 44:7 challenges anyone to step forward and prove they have this ability.
In this verse, God presents a bold claim: He alone can "call, and declare it, and set it in order." This isn't just about guessing the future; it's about a divine ability to ordain, announce, and perfectly arrange future events.
The Power of the Divine Word
God's word isn't a prediction; it's a pre-ordainment. When He "calls," He brings things into existence. When He "declares," He reveals His foreknowledge. When He "sets in order," He meticulously arranges the sequence and timing of events. This is a demonstration of His absolute sovereignty over all of history.
A Challenge to Idols
This declaration is a direct challenge to the idols and false gods of Isaiah's day. These lifeless statues and manufactured deities had no ability to see or influence the future. God's question is a taunt: "If any of you can do this, step forward and prove it." The silence and shame of the idols underscore God's unique power.
Why does God mention appointing an "ancient people" when challenging the false gods? It's a crucial part of His argument.
The phrase "since I appointed the ancient people" is more than just a temporal marker. It points to God's faithfulness to His covenant people, Israel.

A Foundation of Promise
God didn't choose Israel randomly; He "appointed" them, establishing a covenant relationship. This appointment was not based on their merit, but on His sovereign choice and eternal purpose. This ancient relationship is the very basis for His ability to declare future events and guarantee their fulfillment for them.
Witnesses to God's Power
Because God has a history with this "ancient people," they become His witnesses. He has declared things to them from the beginning, and their very existence and the unfolding of His promises to them serve as proof of His unique power. They have seen His past faithfulness, which emboldens them to trust His future declarations.
