The verse reveals that God didn't create the earth as a chaotic void. Instead, He deliberately formed it with a purpose: to be inhabited, meaning it was designed and equipped for life to flourish. This foresight underscores that God's creative acts are always intentional, leading to a fulfillment of His design.
For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): “I am the LORD, and there is no other. I did not speak in secret, in a land of darkness; I did not say to the offspring of Jacob, ‘Seek me in vain.’ I the LORD speak the truth; I declare what is right.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet Isaiah is speaking directly to the people, asserting God's unique power and sovereignty over all creation. This declaration follows God's pronouncements about Cyrus's mission, emphasizing that it is God who orchestrates world events, not human kings or idols. By reminding them that God created the earth specifically to be inhabited, the text sets the stage for promises of restoration and dwelling in their land after exile.
Did God just throw the earth together, or was there a specific intention behind its creation? This verse reveals a profound purpose.
Isaiah 45:18 highlights that God did not create the earth as a barren, empty space. The phrase 'created it not in vain' points to a deliberate design.
