Esau left Canaan, separating from his brother Jacob. Was this just a convenient move, or was God's hand at work?
Genesis 36 describes the lineage of Esau, detailing his separation from Jacob and his settlement in Mount Seir. While the text mentions Esau's increasing riches and the inability of the land to support his large herds as reasons for his departure (Genesis 36:6-7), it's crucial to see this through the lens of God's sovereign plan.
The text repeatedly mentions 'dukes' among Esau's descendants. What did this title signify, and what does it tell us about the structure of Edomite society?
The chapter lists numerous individuals described as 'dukes' (or chiefs) among Esau's descendants, particularly from Eliphaz's line. Understanding this term helps us grasp the organization of the Edomite people.
