Jeremiah 49:7-10

What does Jeremiah 49:7-10 mean?

The verse highlights that Edom, specifically the region of Teman, was once renowned for its wisdom and counsel. The rhetorical questions aren't just about lost knowledge, but about the complete collapse of their ability to strategize and make sound judgments in their time of crisis.

Concerning Edom. Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Is wisdom no more in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished? Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan! For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time when I punish him. If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night, would they not destroy only enough for themselves? But I have stripped Esau bare; I have uncovered his hiding places, and he is not able to conceal himself. His children are destroyed, and his brothers, and his neighbors; and he is no more.

What Jeremiah 49:7-10 means

This passage is part of Jeremiah's prophecies against various nations, focusing here on Edom, the descendants of Esau. The Edomites had a long-standing animosity toward their cousins, the Israelites, and cruelly rejoiced over Jerusalem's destruction. Jeremiah begins by questioning if Edom's famed wisdom and counsel have vanished, highlighting their impending doom. This inquiry sets the stage for the detailed judgment that follows, stripping away their pride and security.

A Reputation for Wisdom

Imagine a place renowned for its brilliant thinkers, the go-to source for sound advice. That was Teman, a key city in Edom.

The prophet Jeremiah opens his message against Edom with a rhetorical punch. He asks, "Is wisdom no more in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished?"

A Golden Age Lost

Teman's Fame: The commentators all point out that Teman was known for its wise men. Think of figures like Eliphaz, one of Job's friends, who hailed from this region. The ancient world valued the insight and practical counsel that came from places like Teman, much like how King Solomon's wisdom was legendary.
The Shock of the Questions: Jeremiah isn't asking if some wisdom is gone. He's asking if all of it has disappeared! These questions highlight a stark contrast: Edom should have had the wisdom to navigate difficult times, but they didn't. Their renowned prudence has utterly failed them.
Proverbial Puzzlement: This reputation for wisdom was so strong that it became proverbial. The prophet's questions are designed to stun his audience. How could a people so famous for their smarts be so utterly foolish in their actions?
