The objection isn't just about some Jews being unfaithful, but that their lack of faith itself is the issue, which Paul uses to highlight that God's faithfulness isn't dependent on human belief. This means God's promises stand true, not because people believe, but because He is inherently faithful, even when humanity isn't.
What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.” But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) By no means! For then how could God judge the world?
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul anticipates an objection: if some Jews, God's chosen people, didn't believe, does their faithlessness somehow prove God unfaithful to His promises? He then argues that the infidelity of some doesn't negate God's enduring faithfulness, asserting that God's truth remains steadfast even when people prove false.
Some people might not believe, but does that mean God's promises are worthless? Paul tackles this head-on.
Paul is wrestling with a tough question here, essentially asking: If some Jews, God's chosen people, don't believe, does that mean God isn't faithful to His promises?
He's not saying everyone is faithless, but acknowledging that some are. The key is that human failure never cancels out God's faithfulness. God's character and His promises are solid, even when people fall short. Think of it like this: A king's word is still powerful even if some subjects disobey him. God's truth stands, regardless of our response.
It might seem like unbelief breaks God's promises, but Paul argues it actually reveals God's truth more clearly.
This is a mind-bending concept! Paul isn't just saying God's faithfulness isn't undone by our unbelief; he's saying that our faithlessness can actually demonstrate God's faithfulness.
How? When people reject God's promises or His truth, and God still remains true to His word (whether that's a promise of blessing for obedience or judgment for disobedience), His faithfulness shines even brighter. It's like a diamond sparkling more against a dark background. God's ultimate justice and truth are shown in how He deals with both belief and unbelief according to His perfect standard.

The question Paul addresses arises from the historical reality that many in Israel, God's chosen people, rejected the very Messiah He sent. This rejection, leading to judgment, could make it seem like God's promises failed, but Paul insists God's faithfulness is upheld, not annulled, by human unfaithfulness.

3:1-8 The law could not save in or from sins, yet it gave the Jews advantages for obtaining salvation. Their stated ordinances, education in the knowledge of the true God and his service, and many favours shown to the children of Abraham, all were means of grace, and doubtless were made useful to the conversion of many.
