Their question, "Where is the God of justice?" isn't just about God's absence, but a challenging assertion that His nature must involve judgment, so His seeming inaction means He's either not just or not God at all. This reveals their deepest offense: not just questioning God, but redefining Him to fit their flawed view of how the world should work.
You have wearied the LORD with your words. But you say, “How have we wearied him?” By saying, “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delights in them.” Or by asking, “Where is the God of justice?”
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet Malachi has just finished rebuking the priests for their corrupt worship and the people for their unfaithfulness, particularly in marriage. Now, he confronts the people directly for their persistent complaints and their disbelief in God's justice, which have exhausted God's patience. They question how they could possibly weary God, while simultaneously arguing that God approves of evil or has abandoned any sense of justice.
Have you ever said something you didn't think would offend God, but it actually grieved Him deeply? Malachi reveals how ordinary-sounding words can be profoundly blasphemous.
The people in Malachi’s day were facing hardship while the wicked around them seemed to prosper. Instead of trusting God’s timing and justice, they voiced dangerous conclusions:
This is what it means to 'weary' the Lord. It’s not that God gets tired like humans, but that His infinite patience is stretched to its limit by words that deny His character and His righteous rule.
When circumstances don't make sense, do we ask God questions that end up questioning His very existence? Malachi exposes the dangerous road from doubt to near-atheism.
The people’s second question, 'Where is the God of justice?', is presented as an alternative to their first statement. Both reveal a deep-seated problem:
Ask a follow-up
This isn't just abstract theology; it’s a warning. When we see suffering and injustice and let our questions about God’s timing slide into doubts about His character or His very being, we tread on dangerous ground.

Malachi prophesies
Malachi delivers his prophecy during a time of spiritual apathy and disillusionment in post-exilic Judah, addressing corrupt worship and social injustice.
This Psalm directly wrestles with the same perplexing question Malachi's audience raises: why do the wicked prosper and seem to have it so easy, while those who try to live righteously struggle?
Isaiah 43:23-24Here, the prophet Isaiah uses similar language, speaking of God being 'wearied' by his people's iniquities, highlighting the profound offense sin and disbelief cause to the Almighty.
Jeremiah 3:14Jeremiah models a righteous response to God's chastisement, acknowledging his own sin and accepting God's wrath patiently, contrasting sharply with the defiant questioning seen in Malachi.
2 Peter 3:3-4The apostle Peter warns against scoffers who mock the idea of Christ's return, asking 'Where is the promise of his coming?' echoing the same cynical disbelief in God's judgment that Malachi condemns.
Job 21:7-15Job confronts similar challenges, questioning why the wicked live in prosperity and power, offering another perspective on this ancient and persistent doubt about divine justice.
