Isaiah 43:23-24

God is essentially saying, "You haven't fulfilled your end of the bargain when it comes to worship, but I haven't made it an impossible burden for you." He highlights that their neglect of sacrifices wasn't due to overwhelming requirements on His part, but rather a failing in their devotion and obedience.
You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings, or honored me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with offerings, or wearied you with frankincense. You have not bought me sweet cane with money, or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices. But you have burdened me with your sins; you have wearied me with your iniquities.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God addresses His people, pointing out their failure to honor Him with the sacrifices and offerings He commanded. He then clarifies that He didn't burden them with these requirements, implying their worship was neglected not due to oppressive demands, but due to their own spiritual apathy and sin.
God calls out the people's neglect, not of outward acts, but of the heart behind them. What does it mean to offer sacrifices that don't 'honor' God?
In Isaiah 43:23, God points out a disconnect between the Israelites' actions and their inner devotion. He states, 'You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings, or honored me with your sacrifices.' This isn't about a lack of animal sacrifices themselves, but about the way they were offered.
God clarifies that His requirements weren't meant to be a burden. What does this reveal about His desire for our worship?
The second half of Isaiah 43:23 reveals God's perspective on His own requirements: 'I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor wearied thee with frankincense.' This statement is crucial for understanding the nature of worship God desires.

This verse comes from the context of the Babylonian Exile, a period when the formal religious practices of Israel were interrupted. God's message here isn't a condemnation of their inability to sacrifice due to exile, but a gentle rebuke for their lack of sincere devotion, even when they *could* offer sacrifices. It highlights that God values the heart behind the worship more than the ritual itself, a truth deeply learned during this time of national hardship.

Composition of Isaiah 43:23
During the Babylonian Exile, Isaiah speaks to a people who have failed to offer heartfelt worship, contrasting their neglect with God's lenient expectations.
This passage directly mirrors Isaiah's complaint about offering polluted sacrifices, highlighting the disconnect between outward ritual and the heart's devotion.
Jeremiah 7:21-23Jeremiah also emphasizes that God's primary desire wasn't the quantity of sacrifices but obedience and a right relationship, aligning with Isaiah's point that God was not 'wearied' by the *requirement* of offerings.
Psalm 50:8-15The Psalmist echoes Isaiah's sentiment, stating that God does not need the sacrifices themselves, but desires the offerer's heart and a life of obedience and thanksgiving.
Matthew 9:13Jesus quotes Hosea (also reflected here) to show that God desires mercy and a right heart over mere ritualistic offerings, underscoring that the 'honoring' God speaks of is not in the act but in the attitude.
