Jesus' sermon starts with applause, but ends with rage. What changed so quickly?
Jesus read from Isaiah, proclaiming a year of favor. The crowd initially loved it, likely imagining this favor would be exclusively theirs. But then Jesus applied the prophetic words, pointing to past instances where God's favor extended beyond Israel—to a widow in Zarephath and Naaman the Syrian. This wasn't just a history lesson; it was a direct challenge to their exclusive understanding of God's grace. They heard Jesus say, in essence, 'God's mercy isn't limited to you; it can and will extend to outsiders.' This truth, that their privileged status wasn't guaranteed and that God's heart was bigger than their own, ignited their fury.
