Jesus didn't come to condemn the world, so why does John say His coming is the judgment? It's all about what the light reveals.
Jesus stated in John 3:17 that He came to save, not to condemn. So how can His arrival be the judgment? The verse explains: "this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light."
Light Exposes, Not Creates
The light itself doesn't cause condemnation; rather, it exposes what's already there. Think of a dark room filled with clutter. When you turn on the light, the mess isn't created by the light – it was always there. The light simply makes it visible. Similarly, Jesus, as the Light of the world, reveals the true condition of our hearts and lives. The judgment isn't an arbitrary act by God, but the natural consequence of rejecting the very revelation that offers salvation.
A Choice with Consequences
John emphasizes that people chose darkness over light. This wasn't a forced decision, but a willful preference. The light makes evil deeds apparent, and those who love their sin prefer the darkness where their actions can remain hidden.
