This verse highlights that even those "strangers who sojourn among them"— foreigners living within Israel—were fully included in this command and its serious consequences. It underscores that God's commands about worship weren't just for native-born Israelites, but for everyone dwelling in their community, demanding unity in approaching Him.
“And you shall say to them, Any one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it to the LORD, that man shall be cut off from his people. “If any one of the house of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn among them eats any blood, I will set my face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage is part of a broader set of laws Moses is relaying from God about how sacrifices must be handled. Just before this, God explained the severe consequences of anyone, Israelite or foreigner, shedding blood improperly outside the Tabernacle. Now, God is specifically addressing the proper place and person for all sacrifices, emphasizing that they must be brought to the entrance of the Tabernacle.
God's laws weren't just for one nation. They were for everyone living under God's care. Who was included in this sacred command?
A Wider Embrace
This verse makes it clear that God’s instructions about worship weren't limited to the Israelites by birth. The phrase “strangers which sojourn among you” refers to non-Israelites who lived within the community.
Before the Tabernacle, worship could happen anywhere. But a radical shift was coming. Why was where you sacrificed so important?
One Place, One Priest
This passage, along with its immediate context (Leviticus 17:9), stresses a critical change: all sacrifices must now be brought to a single, divinely appointed location – the Tabernacle. This wasn't just about convenience; it was theological.
