The verse promises God's presence and blessing "in all places where I cause my name to be remembered," which isn't just about designated holy sites. It speaks to God showing up and blessing wherever His people gather sincerely to honor Him, a principle echoed by Jesus later on.
An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Following the dramatic pronouncements of the Ten Commandments, God now gives instructions about worship, emphasizing simplicity and accessibility. He outlines how to build altars and make sacrifices, noting that these can be done anywhere God's name is honored, and promises His presence and blessing in such places. This assurance bridges the gap between divine law and the people's practical needs as they journey toward the Promised Land.
Ever feel like worship needs fancy buildings and elaborate rituals? God's early instructions for altars might surprise you.
In this verse, God directs the Israelites to build altars of earth, or unhewn stones. This wasn't about grandeur or impressive architecture.
Why the Simplicity?
Where does God promise to meet us? Does it depend on having the 'right' building or location?
The latter half of this verse holds a powerful promise: 'In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you.' This isn't about any random spot, but places intentionally set aside for remembering and worshipping God.
