Judges 11:15-26

What does Judges 11:15-26 mean?

Jephthah's opening statement, "Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites," is a precise legalistic claim. He isn't just saying they didn't conquer these nations, but that Israel did not take away their land—a crucial distinction indicating they didn't seize what specifically belonged to Moab or Ammon, but rather land previously held by the Amorites. This highlights Jephthah's careful adherence to what he understood as God's instructions regarding territorial boundaries.

and said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites, but when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh. Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ but the king of Edom would not listen. And they sent also to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh. “Then they journeyed through the wilderness and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and arrived on the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab. Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon, and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to our country,’ but Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people together and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel. And the LORD, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited that country. And they took possession of all the territory of the Amorites from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan. So then the LORD, the God of Israel, dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel; and are you to take possession of them? Will you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? And all that the LORD our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess. Now are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend against Israel, or did he ever go to war with them? While Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, 300 years, why did you not deliver them within that time?

What Judges 11:15-26 means

Jephthah, now recognized as Israel's leader, sends messengers to the Ammonite king to question the invasion of Israelite territory. The Ammonite king claims the land Israel occupies as his own, but Jephthah disputes this, reminding him that this land was taken from the Amorites, not originally belonging to Moab or Ammon. Jephthah's response is grounded in Israel's history, citing their adherence to God's commands not to take land from Israel's related peoples.

Justifiable Conquest vs. Unlawful Seizure

Why did Jephthah start by talking instead of fighting? His opening statement wasn't just a greeting; it was a carefully crafted legal argument.

When the Ammonites threatened Israel, Jephthah didn't immediately rush into battle. Instead, he sent messengers to the Ammonite king with a clear and direct question: "What do you have against me, that you have come to fight against my land?" (Judges 11:12).

This wasn't a sign of weakness, but of wisdom. Jephthah was acting as a responsible leader, seeking peace before war. His initial defense, as seen in this verse, focused on historical land rights. He stated, "Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites."

This is crucial. The land Israel occupied east of the Jordan River had been taken from the Amorites, not the Moabites or Ammonites directly. They had acquired it through conquest after King Sihon of the Amorites attacked them. Therefore, Jephthah was asserting that Israel's presence in that territory was not an unjust seizure of land belonging to Moab or Ammon, but a legitimate acquisition through warfare against a third party who had initiated hostilities.

The Weight of God's Word

How did Jephthah know the specific historical details to make his case? His argument was rooted in Scripture, demonstrating a leader deeply informed by God's law.

Jephthah's precise arguments about land ownership weren't just based on oral tradition or personal memory. They directly reflect the accounts found in the Torah, particularly in the books of Numbers and Deuteronomy.

For example, his statement that Israel did not take land from Moab or Ammon aligns perfectly with Deuteronomy 2:9 and 2:19. The detailed account of taking the Amorite land from Sihon is found in Numbers 21:24.
