Deuteronomy 2:19

It's easy to just see this as a "don't fight your neighbors" rule, but the real weight here is God's sovereignty over land. He explicitly states that the land belongs to the Ammonites because He gave it to them, emphasizing that His divine allocation, not conquest, determines possession, even for the descendants of Lot. This shows God's authority extends beyond just Israel's inheritance.
And when you approach the territory of the people of Ammon, do not harass them or contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot for a possession.’
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Israelites are on the move, having just defeated the Amorites and now navigating the lands east of the Jordan River. After being warned not to provoke the Moabites, they are now instructed to bypass the Ammonites, who are related to the Moabites through Lot. This directive is given because God has already designated the land of the Ammonites as a possession for them, just as He did for the Moabites.
Ever wondered why some nations are 'given' land and others aren't? This verse reveals God's direct hand in assigning territories.
In Deuteronomy 2, God is giving instructions to the Israelites as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. He specifically tells them NOT to attack or provoke the Ammonites. The reason? God Himself had already given that land to the descendants of Lot (who were the Ammonites and Moabites) as their inheritance.
This isn't about who is 'strongest' or 'most deserving' in a human sense. It's about God's sovereign decree. He is the ultimate owner and distributor of land. This principle is established early on: God determines national boundaries and ownership.
The Ammonites were descendants of Lot, born from a scandalous situation. Yet, God showed them favor. What does this teach us about His mercy?
It might surprise us that God instructs Israel to leave the Ammonites alone, considering their origins. The Ammonites, along with the Moabites, were descendants of Lot's daughters who, in a state of intoxication, conceived children with their own father (Genesis 19:30-38). This is a disturbing and morally compromised beginning.

However, the text here points to a deeper reason for God's protection: their connection to Lot, who was Abraham's nephew and a righteous man in a wicked city.
