Jephthah's opening question isn't just about the invasion itself; it's a profound legal and historical challenge. He uses the phrase "What do you have against me?" to assert his legitimate authority over the land, essentially saying, "Show me the evidence, the rightful claim, that justifies this aggression against my people." This immediately frames the conflict not as a mere border skirmish, but as a matter of justice and disputed territory, setting the stage for his detailed theological and historical defense later on.
Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites and said, “What do you have against me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?” And the king of the Ammonites answered the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel on coming up from Egypt took away my land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; now therefore restore it peaceably.” Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites
