The Jewish leaders weren't just upset about a single act of healing on the Sabbath; the Greek points to a pattern. Jesus wasn't just doing things on the Sabbath, but "was habitually doing" them, suggesting they saw His actions as a deliberate disregard of their traditions, escalating their pursuit.
And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus has just healed a man who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years on the Sabbath, telling him to pick up his mat and walk. This act of compassion and authority on the Sabbath immediately sparks intense opposition from the Jewish authorities, who see it as a violation of their sacred law. Their hostility escalates from questioning Jesus to actively seeking to kill him because they believed he was habitually breaking the Sabbath.
Why did healing someone on the Sabbath spark such intense persecution? It wasn't just about a day off, but a deeper clash over God's nature and authority.
The religious leaders of Jesus' day were deeply invested in the Sabbath laws, seeing them as a divine boundary. Their objection to Jesus' actions wasn't just about breaking a rule; it was about what they believed that rule represented about God's commands and Jesus' own claims.
A Misunderstood Command?
When confronted, Jesus didn't just defend himself; he revealed a stunning parallel between his work and God the Father's. What does this tell us about His identity?
Jesus' response to the accusation of Sabbath-breaking escalates the conflict dramatically. He doesn't simply say healing is permissible; he declares that His ongoing work is a direct continuation of the Father's work.
