Exodus 20:8-11

What does Exodus 20:8-11 mean?

The word "Remember" here isn't just a casual nudge; it highlights that the Sabbath was an existing, ancient command from creation itself, not a brand new rule for the Israelites. It calls them to recall this established holy rest, distinguishing it from their everyday lives and their recent exodus from Egypt.

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

What Exodus 20:8-11 means

This commandment appears within the context of God giving the Israelites the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai, forming the core of their covenant relationship. It immediately follows the commands regarding the worship of God alone and prohibits making idols, establishing the foundational principles for Israelite society before delving into rest and honoring parents. The text emphasizes remembering the Sabbath, connecting it to God's own rest after creation as the reason for its sanctity.

A Command to Remember, Not a New Rule

Why does God start this commandment with 'Remember'?

The word 'remember' here isn't introducing a brand new idea, but calling Israel back to something already established. God's Word tells us that the Sabbath was set apart from the very beginning, with creation itself.

Creation's Pattern: Genesis 2:2-3 shows God resting on the seventh day and blessing it. This wasn't just about Him stopping work; it was about setting a pattern for humanity and marking that day as special.
A Reminder of Relationship: When God says 'remember,' He's reminding Israel of their foundational relationship with Him as Creator and Redeemer. Observing the Sabbath was a way to distinguish themselves from nations who worshiped created things instead of the Creator.

More Than Just Not Working

Is the Sabbath just a day to do nothing?

While rest from labor is a crucial part, the command 'to keep it holy' points to a deeper purpose. Holiness means being set apart, dedicated to God.

A Day for Holy Exercises: The Sabbath wasn't meant to be simply a day of idleness. It was intended for holy activities – communion with God, reflection on His works, and spiritual renewal.
Dedicating Time to God: Just as God dedicated the seventh day, His people were called to dedicate their seventh day to Him. This meant setting aside ordinary business and worldly concerns to focus on Him and His purposes.
