We often think of the Sabbath as a break from work. But what does it truly mean to 'honor' it as holy?
Isaiah 58:13 calls us to turn our 'foot' away from the Sabbath, not in a way that suggests merely stopping physical activity, but by actively redirecting our desires and actions.
From 'Your Pleasure' to 'His Honor'
The verse contrasts 'doing your pleasure' with 'calling the Sabbath a delight' and 'honorable.' This isn't about finding joy despite God's commands, but finding joy in observing His command.
- Turning from 'Your Ways': This means setting aside our personal agendas, our usual routines, and the things we want to accomplish or pursue.
- Turning from 'Your Pleasure': This goes beyond mere business; it's about reining in our self-gratification, our preferred pastimes, and anything that distracts from holiness.
- Turning from 'Your Words': Even our conversations are to be different – not idle chatter, gossip, or self-serving talk, but words that honor God and the sacredness of the day.
When we treat the Sabbath as 'the holy of the LORD' and 'honorable,' we're acknowledging its divine appointment and purpose, not just its function as a day of rest.
