The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voice; together they sing for joy; for eye to eye they see the return of the LORD to Zion. Break forth together into singing, you waste places of Jerusalem, for the LORD has comforted his people; he has redeemed Jerusalem. The LORD has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet Isaiah has just announced the coming of a messenger who heralds good news and the reign of God to Zion. This verse continues that hopeful proclamation by describing the joyous response of Zion's watchmen, who are like sentinels on a wall. They will lift their voices in unified song as they clearly see the LORD's return to restore and bless His people.
Imagine standing on high walls, straining to see what's coming. What does it mean for these 'watchmen' to see 'eye to eye'?
The imagery here is powerful. The watchmen, likely representing spiritual leaders or prophets, are tasked with guarding and observing.
A Distinct and Manifest Presence
When the text says they see 'eye to eye,' it doesn't mean they agree with each other. Instead, it signifies a remarkably clear and direct perception. Think of seeing someone face-to-face, without any veil or obstruction. It implies they will see the LORD's return to Zion with perfect clarity, recognizing His presence and glory directly and undeniably. This is more than just a distant sighting; it's an intimate, unmistakable recognition of God's glorious return and active reign.
These watchmen aren't just seeing; they're singing! What does their combined voice reveal about God's work?
The watchmen don't just see; they react. Their immediate response is to 'lift up their voice' and 'sing for joy, together.'
Shared Celebration
This isn't a solitary or hesitant cheer. The 'together' highlights unity in their exultation. When God powerfully intervenes and makes His presence known, His servants are called to a shared, exuberant celebration. This points to the communal nature of faith and worship, where God's great acts are met with a unified voice of praise, reflecting a common understanding and shared delight in His faithfulness.
