While the people taken are certainly held accountable for their own sins, the verse chillingly reveals that the watchman's negligence becomes the direct cause of their being taken away in their iniquity, unprepared and unrepenting. God holds the watchman equally responsible, if not more so, for failing to sound the alarm that could have offered them a chance to turn.
But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God has just commissioned Ezekiel as a watchman to warn His people, a role that carries immense responsibility. This passage, therefore, explains the severe consequences for Ezekiel if he fails to sound the alarm when danger (represented by the "sword" of judgment or invasion) approaches, emphasizing that the people will perish in their sins and God will hold the watchman accountable for their blood. This stark warning directly precedes the explanation of how the prophet's message applies to both the wicked and the righteous among the people.
God brings the sword, but the watchman is held accountable for the people's ignorance of it. How can both be true?
This passage highlights a profound tension in God's dealings with humanity. God is sovereign and can bring judgment (Ezekiel 14:17), yet He also delegates responsibility. The watchman is tasked with a specific duty: to see the danger and sound the alarm. When the people perish without warning, it's not just their own sin that condemns them; the watchman's failure to act becomes a critical factor. God requires the watchman's hand for the blood shed due to neglect, underscoring that our actions (or inactions) have eternal consequences.
What does it mean to be 'taken away in his iniquity,' and why is the watchman's failure so critical to this?
The verse states that if the people are not warned, they are 'taken away in his iniquity.' This is a terrifying prospect. It implies being removed from life without a moment to truly confront, repent of, or seek forgiveness for the sins that define one's life. The watchman’s failure means the community doesn't have the crucial opportunity to turn from their destructive paths. The blood of those who perish in this state is charged to the watchman, emphasizing the immense value God places on every soul and the importance of warning them of the spiritual dangers they face.
