What's easy to miss is that "Rahab" and "the dragon" aren't just random monsters. They are ancient, symbolic names for Egypt and its fierce ruler, Pharaoh. By invoking these past victories, the prophet reminds God (and us!) that the same powerful arm that defeated those ancient enemies is still ready to act.
Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in days of old, the generations of long ago. Was it not you who cut Rahab in pieces, who pierced the dragon? Was it not you who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made the depths of the sea a way for the redeemed to pass over?
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet is addressing God directly, imploring Him to act with the same power He showed in ancient days. This plea comes amidst a time of distress and likely exile for God's people, and it recalls God's mighty defeat of Egypt (symbolized as "Rahab" and the "dragon") during the Exodus. The appeal hinges on the idea that the God who once powerfully delivered His people can and will do so again.
Do you ever feel like God's strength, the kind that dramatically changed history, is missing today? This verse speaks to that feeling, reminding us that God's power is not a thing of the past.
The prophet, likely speaking for the people in exile, cries out, "Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD!" It's a powerful plea, almost like seeing someone asleep when a crisis hits. But notice how it's addressed to the "arm of the LORD." The arm is God's instrument of power, His way of acting in the world. The plea isn't that God lacks strength, but that He should manifest it, as He did in ancient days. This verse assures us that God's power isn't diminished or retired. It's a call for its visible display, a reminder that the God who acted powerfully before is the same God now.
Why does Isaiah use strange names like 'Rahab' and 'dragon' when talking about God's power? It's a literary device that unlocks a deeper understanding of His victory.
The verse boldly asks, "Was it not you who cut Rahab in pieces, who pierced the dragon?" 'Rahab' and 'dragon' are ancient symbols, often representing powerful, chaotic forces or nations that opposed God and His people. Scholars suggest these terms might echo creation myths where a deity battles chaotic monsters to establish order. In this context, 'Rahab' and 'the dragon' specifically symbolize Egypt and its powerful Pharaoh, whose armies were destroyed in the Red Sea. By using this vivid, almost mythological language, Isaiah connects God's past victory over Egypt to His ultimate power over all forces that stand against Him. It's not just a historical event; it's a demonstration of God's sovereignty over chaos and oppression.
