The verse highlights that the Messiah's understanding is rooted in a deep "fear of the LORD," not merely human perception. This means his judgments aren't based on what mere eyes can see or ears can hear, but on an inner discernment that goes straight to the heart of matters.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage describes the righteous character and just judgment of the coming Messiah. Building on the prophecy of a royal descendant of Jesse, it emphasizes that this ruler will possess divine wisdom and a deep reverence for God, guiding all his decisions. Unlike earthly rulers who might be swayed by appearances or hearsay, the Messiah will possess an infallible insight into truth and justice.
What does it mean for a King to 'delight' in God's fear? It's more than just following rules; it's about a deep inner disposition.
The verse begins by stating, 'his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.' This isn't just about avoiding sin; it's about a profound pleasure and satisfaction found in aligning with God's character and will. For the Messiah, this 'fear of the Lord' isn't about being scared of God, but rather a deep reverence, awe, and devotion that shapes His entire being.
We often judge based on what we see and hear. But what if the perfect King operates on a completely different level?
The verse continues, 'He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear.' This points to the Messiah's perfect ability to discern truth beyond mere appearances or hearsay.
