Samuel, a seasoned prophet, was about to make a big mistake. He was ready to anoint the next king based on what he saw.
Samuel's Near Miss
Samuel was looking for kingly qualities – strength, presence, impressive stature. He was drawn to Eliab, the eldest son, who seemed like a perfect fit based on outward appearance. But God stepped in with a powerful correction: 'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him.'
This wasn't just about picking a king; it was a foundational lesson for Samuel and for us. God's evaluation is fundamentally different from ours. What impresses us might be exactly what God has set aside.
