Hosea 2:16-20

What does Hosea 2:16-20 mean?

It's not just about switching titles from "Lord" to "Husband"; it's about shifting the entire dynamic of the relationship from one of fearful obligation to one of tender intimacy and devoted love. God is deliberately rejecting a title that sounds too much like the name of pagan gods, even though it could mean "my Lord," because He wants to be known by a name that signifies a deeper, more personal bond, a love that won't be overshadowed by idolatry.

“And in that day, declares the LORD, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. And I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in safety. And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the LORD.

What Hosea 2:16-20 means

Hosea is detailing God's fierce love for unfaithful Israel, describing her spiritual adultery with other gods. After recounting their punishment and exile for this betrayal, God promises a future restoration where He will win back their hearts, drawing them out into the wilderness again but this time to speak tenderly to them. This verse marks a pivotal shift, outlining how their relationship will be redefined with a new name of intimacy and affection, replacing one that carried the weight of their idolatry.

The Weight of a Name: Baal vs. Ishi

Ever notice how a single word can carry so much baggage? In Hosea's day, two Hebrew words for 'husband' held vastly different meanings for Israel.

God tells Israel in Hosea 2:16, 'you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’' Let's break this down:

'My Baal' - A Name of Fear and Idolatry

What it meant: The word 'Baal' originally meant 'lord' or 'master.' It was a common title, even used for human husbands. However, for Israel, it had become inextricably linked with the Canaanite idol Baal. This idol was associated with fertility, storms, and demand for sacrifice. Using 'Baal' for God would bring to mind these false gods and the fear, obligation, and idolatrous practices connected with them.
Why God rejected it: God hated that the name used for Him was tainted by idolatry. He didn't want His people to associate Him with the fear and conditional worship of pagan deities. He wanted them to move away from any hint of idolatry and the mindset that accompanied it.

'Ishi' - A Name of Tender Love and Covenant

What it means: 'Ishi' is a more intimate and tender word for husband. It emphasizes companionship, affection, and a deep, personal bond. It's the language of love, not of fearful servitude.
The promise: By calling God 'Ishi,' Israel would be returning to a pure, covenantal relationship. It signifies a relationship based on love, trust, and mutual devotion, reflecting the deep, loving commitment God had for His people, like a husband for his wife.
