What's easily missed here is the precise meaning of "unchangeable." It doesn't just mean Christ's priesthood is firm; it emphasizes that it "does not pass over to another." Unlike earthly priests who died and handed over their duties, Jesus's priesthood is perpetually His own because He lives forever.
but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The author is contrasting Jesus' eternal priesthood with the temporary, often-changing Levitical priesthood. Unlike human priests who died and had to be replaced, Jesus lives forever, ensuring his priesthood never passes to another or becomes obsolete. This permanence is the foundation for his ability to save all who come to God through him.
Ever wonder why Jesus' priesthood is so special? It's not just that He's a priest, but that His priesthood can't be passed on.
The key to understanding Hebrews 7:24 lies in the word 'unchangeable.' While it means 'inviolable' or 'not to be transgressed,' the context here strongly suggests it means 'untransmissible' or 'that does not pass from one to another.' Think about the Levitical priests – they had to pass their office down because they died. But Jesus, because He lives forever, holds His priesthood permanently. It never leaves Him and never goes to someone else. This isn't just a detail; it’s the foundation for His ability to save completely.
Jesus lives forever! This isn't just a cool fact; it’s the very reason His priesthood is so powerful and effective.
The verse links Christ's eternal existence directly to His permanent priesthood. Because Jesus continues forever, His priestly work is not limited by time or death. This means His sacrifice is eternally effective, and His intercession is ongoing.
