Even with the best intentions and God's help, we all fall short. What hope do we have when we fail, and who steps in?
Acknowledging Our Weakness
John is realistic. He knows that even as followers of Christ, we will still stumble and sin. He doesn't dismiss this reality or encourage complacency. Instead, he acknowledges it as a genuine part of the human experience, even for those who are 'little children' in faith.
The Advocate Who Stands for Us
This is where the incredible grace of God shines! When we do sin, we don't face judgment alone. We have Jesus, our 'Advocate,' who stands with the Father on our behalf. The original language paints a picture of someone who pleads our case, defends us, and speaks for us. Because Jesus is 'the righteous one,' His perfect life and atoning sacrifice make our defense successful. He bridges the gap created by our sin, ensuring our relationship with the Father remains intact.
