Hebrews 1:1-5

What does Hebrews 1:1-5 mean?

The verse highlights God's communication as being "in many portions" and "in many ways." This isn't just about different times or methods; it emphasizes that God's ancient revelations were incomplete, each a piece of a larger, unfolding story, deliberately given in fragments and varied manners. This sets the stage for a more complete, unified revelation to come.

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”?

What Hebrews 1:1-5 means

This passage kicks off the entire letter, setting the stage for a profound argument about Jesus' identity. The author is addressing Jewish Christians who are tempted to revert to Old Testament traditions, so he begins by highlighting how God's previous communications through prophets were partial and varied. He contrasts this with the ultimate, complete revelation now given in His Son, who is far superior to the prophets.

Revelation: Pieced Together Over Time

Ever feel like God's message is scattered, not always clear? You're not alone. The Bible itself shows us God's communication wasn't a single, instant download.

The phrase 'at sundry times' (or 'in many portions') highlights that God's communication in the Old Testament was revealed gradually. Think of it like a puzzle. God didn't hand over all the pieces at once. Instead, He gave them out piece by piece, across different eras and to different people.

Partial Truths: Each prophet received a part of the bigger picture. Abraham learned about a chosen nation, David about a coming King, Daniel about a specific time. No single prophet had the complete message.
Building Blocks: These partial revelations weren't random. They were building blocks, each preparing the way for the next, leading toward a grander, final revelation.
Theological Purpose: This piecemeal approach underscores God's patient, progressive unfolding of His plan, revealing more as humanity was ready to receive it.

Revelation: Diverse Methods, One Divine Source

How does God communicate? While we might expect one standard method, the Bible shows a surprisingly creative God, using a variety of ways to get His message across.

The phrase 'in many ways' points to the diverse methods God employed throughout the Old Testament. It wasn't just one style of communication; God adapted His approach to suit different times, people, and messages.
