God is highlighting that the typical ways He communicates with prophets—through visions and dreams—are different and less direct than how He speaks to Moses. This isn't just about different methods, but about a profound difference in intimacy and clarity, setting Moses apart even from other gifted individuals like Aaron and Miriam.
And he said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the LORD make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream. Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house. With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Aaron and Miriam have just spoken against Moses, questioning his authority and leadership, specifically mentioning his marriage to a Cushite woman and implying God speaks only through Moses. In response, God intervenes directly, calling Aaron and Miriam to the Tabernacle to address their rebellious hearts and then speaking to them to clarify the unique way He communicates with Moses compared to other prophets.
Ever wonder if God speaks to people today like He did in the Bible? This verse shows us there are different ways God makes Himself known.
In this passage, God clarifies that while prophets receive His messages through visions and dreams, His communication with Moses is unique.
Visions and Dreams
The Uniqueness of Moses
God emphasizes that while these are common methods for prophets, His relationship with Moses is even more intimate. This sets Moses apart and highlights the special role God has given him.
Miriam and Aaron questioned Moses' authority. God’s response reminds them (and us) who is truly in charge.
The Lord uses this moment to establish His absolute authority and to clarify the different levels of communication within the prophetic office.
God's Directives
God declares, 'If there is a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known to him...' This isn't a question of He communicates, but and to whom.

Establishing Hierarchy
By explaining the typical ways prophets receive messages (visions and dreams), God implicitly contrasts this with His direct communication with Moses. This isn't to diminish the other prophets, but to affirm Moses' unique position as the mediator of God's law and presence to Israel. It underscores that even those with spiritual gifts are subordinate to God's chosen leader.
Understand the original words

A human spokesperson chosen by God to communicate His divine will, warnings, or revelations to His people. Prophets were uniquely moved by the Holy Spirit to deliver messages that originated from God rather than themselves.
mar'â · Hebrew Noun

ne'ĕmān · Hebrew Adjective
One who is loyal, trustworthy, and steadfast in fulfilling a duty or commission. In a biblical context, it implies complete reliability in stewardship over what God has entrusted to an individual.
bayit · Hebrew Noun
Refers to God’s people (Israel) or the entire administration of God's kingdom and covenant community. Moses is described as having singular faithfulness in administering this sphere.
peh 'el peh · Hebrew Phrase
A term describing divine revelation that is direct, unmediated, and intimate. It implies a level of clarity and personal relational interaction that surpasses the indirect communication (visions/dreams) given to other prophets.
ḥîdâ · Hebrew Noun
A figure of speech, obscure saying, or enigma. In prophecy, it refers to messages that require interpretation or contain veiled meaning, contrasting with the clarity God used with Moses.
tĕmûnâ · Hebrew Noun
The visible manifestation or representation of God's presence. It denotes the aspect of God that can be perceived by humans, reflecting His glory and reality, yet distinct from His incomprehensible essence.
yārē' · Hebrew Verb
A holy or reverent awe before God’s majesty, holiness, and judgment. It involves a recognition of God's sovereignty and a rightful dread of opposing His chosen representatives.
