Isaiah 28:10-13

What does Isaiah 28:10-13 mean?

The scoffers mock the prophet's teaching as repetitive and elementary, like lessons for children. But Isaiah is pointing out that God's consistent, foundational truths, though seemingly simple, are precisely what these proud adults are too spiritually immature to grasp.

For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.” For by people of strange lips and with a foreign tongue the LORD will speak to this people, to whom he has said, “This is rest; give rest to the weary; and this is repose”; yet they would not hear. And the word of the LORD will be to them precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little, that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

What Isaiah 28:10-13 means

The people of Judah, particularly their leaders, are arrogantly confident, believing they are immune to God's judgment despite their moral and spiritual corruption, which has led them to mock the prophet Isaiah. In response, Isaiah is explaining that God's message to them, unlike the profound truth they reject, will be reduced to a repetitive, simplistic, and ultimately ineffective form because of their own unwillingness to understand. This leads directly into God's judgment that their continued rejection of His word will result in confusion and destruction.

Mockery of Simple Truths

Why would scoffers mock the very way God teaches? This verse reveals a sneering attitude toward basic, repetitive instruction.

The people of Isaiah's day, particularly the proud and drunken leaders, were mocking the prophet's teaching. They described it dismissively as 'precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little, there a little.' This wasn't a criticism of what Isaiah was saying, but how he was saying it.

They wanted grand, eloquent pronouncements, not the seemingly simple, repeated truths that God gave. This attitude is like a child who complains about having to learn their ABCs over and over, or a student who scoffs at a teacher breaking down a complex problem into small, manageable steps. The leaders were too proud to accept God's patient, foundational instruction. They saw it as beneath them, not realizing that God's method is designed to build understanding, even for the most profound truths.

God's Method: Patience and Repetition

Is God's teaching style really 'here a little, there a little'? Discover the divine wisdom behind seemingly simple repetition.

The repetitive phrasing ('precept upon precept,' 'line upon line') isn't just a description of how the scoffers perceived God's word; it reflects God's patient, pedagogical approach. Imagine teaching a child to read: you don't start with Shakespeare. You begin with letters, then words, then simple sentences – a 'little here, a little there.'

God's method of instruction often mirrors this. He doesn't overwhelm us. Instead, He builds truth upon truth, line upon line. This approach acknowledges our limitations, our tendency to forget, and our need for consistent reinforcement. The scoffers saw this as tedious and beneath them. But for those who truly seek God, this methodical, layered approach is a sign of His grace and faithfulness, patiently leading us to understand His will.
