The real offense wasn't just letting foreigners near the sanctuary, but allowing those "uncircumcised in heart" — those with no genuine desire for God — to participate while sacred offerings were being made. This wasn't simply a breach of ritual purity; it was a violation of the covenant itself, turning God's house into a place of spiritual impurity.
in admitting foreigners, uncircumcised in heart and flesh, to be in my sanctuary, profaning my temple, when you offer to me my food, the fat and the blood. You have broken my covenant, in addition to all your abominations.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet is detailing specific violations of God's covenant that occurred in the past, particularly within the temple itself. This verse highlights the egregious sin of allowing uncircumcised foreigners, both outwardly and inwardly, to enter and defile the sanctuary while sacred offerings were being made. This breach of God's law, by admitting those spiritually and physically impure, directly violated the covenant concerning the holiness of the temple and its worship.
God's temple was a place of ultimate holiness. But something was terribly wrong, and strangers were getting in.
In Ezekiel 44:7, God is furious about 'strangers, uncircumcised in heart and flesh,' being allowed into His sanctuary. This wasn't just about foreigners; it was about people who were spiritually and outwardly alienated from God's covenant people.
Allowing these 'strangers' wasn't just a mistake; it was a direct betrayal of God's agreement with His people.
Ezekiel 44:7 hammers home the severity of this sin: 'You have broken my covenant, in addition to all your abominations.' This wasn't a minor infraction; it was a fundamental breach of the relationship God established with Israel.
