The priests' failure wasn't just breaking rules, but a fundamental loss of discernment. They stopped teaching and even seeing the vital distinctions between the sacred and the ordinary, the clean and the unclean, essentially blurring God's holiness into everyday life. This blurred vision meant God Himself was no longer seen as set apart and honored.
Her priests have done violence to my law and have profaned my holy things. They have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean, and they have disregarded my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.
English Standard Version (ESV)
In this passage, Ezekiel is speaking to Jerusalem, a city steeped in corruption and idolatry. He's just detailed the sins of the rulers, and now he turns his attention to the religious leaders, the priests, highlighting their profound unfaithfulness. Their role was to uphold God's law and teach the people how to live righteously, but instead, they’ve actively blurred the sacred lines God established.
Ever felt like leaders were ignoring the rules and dragging everyone down with them? Ezekiel paints a vivid picture of religious leaders who did just that.
Ezekiel calls out the priests, who were supposed to be guides, for actively 'doing violence' to God's law. This wasn't just accidental breaking; it was twisting and misinterpreting God's commands.
The Priests' Failures:
What happens when the sacred is treated as ordinary? Ezekiel says it leads to God Himself being dishonored.
A major theme here is the loss of discernment between the holy and the common. The priests failed in their duty to teach the people these crucial distinctions, which were central to Israel's identity and relationship with God.
