The verse emphasizes that the priest isn't just a dispenser of information, but a careful guardian of divine knowledge, meaning they must first truly possess and uphold God's truth themselves before sharing it. This role as God's "messenger" is profound, highlighting the immense responsibility to accurately convey the Creator's will to humanity.
For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. But you have turned aside from the way. You have caused many to stumble by your instruction. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the LORD of hosts, and so I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you do not keep my ways but show partiality in your instruction.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Malachi is addressing the priests directly, calling them out for corrupting the covenant God made with the tribe of Levi. He's just accused them of showing favoritism and perverting God's law, leading people astray. This verse explains what their true role should be: guardians of divine knowledge and God's official messengers to the people.
The verse calls priests to 'guard knowledge.' What does it mean for spiritual leaders to both keep and share God's truth?
This verse highlights a crucial twofold responsibility for those who speak for God:
Guarding the Knowledge:
Priests were meant to be deeply versed in God's law and wisdom. The word 'keep' here doesn't just mean to passively hold onto information, but to preserve it, to be thoroughly acquainted with it, and to live by it. Think of it like carefully safeguarding a precious treasure – they were to protect the integrity and truth of God's Word.
Giving the Law:
However, this knowledge wasn't meant to be hoarded. The people were to 'seek instruction from his mouth.' This means priests were expected to be accessible, clear, and faithful in explaining God's will. They were to be living conduits of divine truth, making it understandable and applicable to the people's lives.
The verse declares the priest is a 'messenger of the LORD of hosts.' What immense weight does this title carry?
Calling the priest a 'messenger' (or 'angel' in the original language) elevates their role to one of profound significance. This title implies:
Divine Appointment:
Priests weren't just religious officials; they were divinely appointed representatives. They stood as intermediaries between God and the people, carrying God's message and authority.

Heavenly Parallel:
The term 'messenger' or 'angel' connects the earthly priest to the heavenly host. Just as angels serve as God's heralds and agents in the spiritual realm, priests were to be God's voice and agents on earth.
Accountability:
This lofty title also underscores immense accountability. A messenger must be faithful to the one who sent them, accurately conveying the message without distortion. The priests in Malachi's time had failed in this, leading to God's judgment.
