Division, disagreement, and going our own way – sound familiar? God's promise of renewal brings a powerful antidote: unity.
Ezekiel doesn't just promise a change in quality of heart, but also in unity.
The Problem of Division
Before this promise, God's people were often characterized by a 'divided heart' (Hosea 10:2) – pulled in different directions, serving multiple masters, and pursuing individualistic paths. This led to internal strife and disobedience.
The Promise of Oneness
God declares, 'I will give them one heart.' This signifies:
- Unity of Purpose: A shared direction and commitment to serving God.
- Harmony: A sense of togetherness and mutual affection, moving away from self-will.
- Singleness of Devotion: A heart focused on God alone, not distracted by idols or personal agendas.
This internal unity, empowered by the 'new spirit' God puts within them, is the foundation for restored relationship with God and with each other.
