Jeremiah 31:33
This page isn't yet indexed by search engines.
This new covenant isn't about a different law, but about God's law being internalized—written on the heart and "inward parts"—transforming obedience from an external duty to an inner reality. It highlights that while God's law existed before, this covenant promises a profound, Spirit-wrought change, making obedience a delight rather than a burden.
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jeremiah has just prophesied the impending destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of Judah as a consequence of their disobedience. This verse, however, pivots to a future hope, outlining a new covenant God will make with Israel that contrasts sharply with the failures of the past. It promises an internal transformation, where God's law will be deeply ingrained in their hearts, leading to genuine relationship and obedience, not just external compliance.
Did God replace His Law with something new? Not exactly! Jeremiah reveals a profound shift in how God's commands are experienced.
Jeremiah 31:33 speaks of a new covenant where God 'will put my law within them, and write it on their hearts.' This isn't about discarding the old law. Instead, it's about a transformation of its application and reception.
What's the ultimate promise of this new covenant? It boils down to God Himself being intimately present with His people.
The verse culminates with God's powerful declaration: 'And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.' This isn't just a nice closing statement; it's the very heart and soul of the covenant relationship.
