Ecclesiastes 2:14-16

Even though wisdom clearly sets the wise apart from fools, Solomon notes with a sigh that "one event" ultimately befalls them both. This "event" isn't just random chance; it's the stark reality of death, a great equalizer that makes all earthly distinctions meaningless in its wake.
The wise person has his eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the same event happens to all of them. Then I said in my heart, “What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?” And I said in my heart that this also is vanity. For of the wise as of the fool there is no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. How the wise dies just like the fool!
English Standard Version (ESV)
The narrator has been exploring what brings meaning and lasting value to life, contrasting wisdom and folly. While acknowledging that wisdom is clearly superior for navigating life's challenges, he observes that both the wise and the foolish ultimately face the same inevitable end. This realization undercuts any lasting earthly advantage or distinction between them.
Ever feel like you're the only one seeing the pitfalls ahead? This verse gives us a vivid picture of the difference between how the wise and the foolish navigate life.
Solomon uses powerful imagery here. The wise person has their 'eyes in their head' – meaning they use their intellect, their understanding, and their God-given senses to perceive reality. They look ahead, they consider consequences, and they act with deliberation.
But the 'fool walks in darkness.' This isn't just about being ignorant; it's about a fundamental lack of perception. They stumble through life, unaware of the dangers or the spiritual realities around them. It's a profound difference in how one experiences the world, with the wise person seemingly at a distinct advantage.
Even with all the advantages wisdom brings, Solomon drops a bombshell: 'the same event happens to all of them.' What is this ultimate reality that levels the playing field?
Despite the clear advantage the wise person has in navigating life's challenges – seeing dangers and making better choices – Solomon's personal observation is stark: 'And yet I perceived that the same event happens to all of them.'
This 'event' is most commonly understood as death. All the wisdom, planning, and foresight in the world cannot ultimately shield a person from this universal end. It's the great equalizer. Whether you live with sharp intellect or stumble blindly, death comes to all. This isn't a message of despair, but a call to understand life's true priorities beyond earthly achievements or temporal advantages.
