Deuteronomy 6:20-24

What does Deuteronomy 6:20-24 mean?

The verse highlights that the commandments aren't just a list of rules, but divine "testimonies" – evidence of God's faithfulness and nature – and "judgments" that reflect His righteous character. It implies that the core of understanding God’s commands lies in recognizing them as revelations of who He is and how He operates. This invites us to see obedience not as blind adherence, but as a response to God's revealed goodness and truth.

“When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the LORD our God has commanded you?’ then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day.

What Deuteronomy 6:20-24 means

This passage is part of Moses' final address to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land, urging them to remain faithful to God and His Law. He has just emphasized the importance of diligently keeping God's commands, and now he anticipates a future generation asking why these laws are so significant. The context sets up a "catechism" where parents are to explain that the statutes and commands are not arbitrary rules but are tied to God's gracious actions in delivering them from Egypt and establishing them in the land He promised.

The 'Why' Behind God's Law

Ever wondered why God gave so many rules? This verse sets up a crucial conversation about understanding the purpose behind His commands.

Moses is instructing parents to be ready to explain the deeper meaning of God's laws. The question your son asks isn't just about memorizing rules; it's about understanding the 'testimonies,' 'statutes,' and 'judgments' God has given.

Testimonies: These are God's enduring witness and covenant faithfulness. They testify to who God is and what He has done.
Statutes: These are the binding, authoritative decrees and ordinances God established.
Judgments: These refer to God's righteous decisions and the principles for living justly that He provides.

When your child asks 'What do these mean?', the answer isn't just a list of do's and don'ts. It's about revealing God's character, His faithfulness, and His desire for justice and relationship with His people.

From Duty to Deeper Understanding

The Bible doesn't just tell us what to do, but invites us to explore why it matters. This verse is the starting point for that exploration.

The question from the son is a catalyst for parents to articulate the connection between God's past actions and His present commands. It’s about moving beyond mere obedience to a genuine understanding and appreciation of God’s covenant love.
