This verse highlights that the stones weren't just a monument for the adults who witnessed the miracle, but specifically designed as a prompt for future generations. The true power of the memorial lay not in the stones themselves, but in the questions they were meant to spark, creating a chain of remembrance passed down through families.
that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Immediately after the Israelites miraculously crossed the Jordan River on dry ground, Joshua was instructed to have twelve stones, one from each tribe, taken from the riverbed and set up as a memorial. This physical monument was intended to prompt questions from future generations, serving as a tangible reminder of God's power and faithfulness. The purpose of these stones was to spark conversations that would pass down the incredible story of their deliverance.
Why would God command the Israelites to build a pile of stones after such a monumental miracle? It wasn't just about remembering; it was about passing the story on.
The twelve stones pulled from the Jordan weren't just a random pile. They were specifically chosen and placed as a tangible sign, a memorial to remind the Israelites of God's power in parting the river.
This wasn't meant to be a silent monument. The very purpose was for future generations to ask, 'What does this mean?' This turned a physical object into a teaching moment, a catalyst for parents to share the incredible story of God's faithfulness.
The stones themselves didn't hold inherent meaning. Their significance came from the story they represented and the intentional act of passing that story down.
The power of this memorial lay not in the stones themselves, but in the narrative they anchored. God didn't just want them to see stones; He wanted them to remember why the stones were there – because the Jordan River was miraculously stopped.
This highlights a crucial aspect of faith: it's not just about experiencing God's power, but about understanding its meaning and communicating that understanding. The 'asking' of the children was key; it prompted the 'answering' and the recounting of God's mighty deeds.
