The prophecy details a stark reversal: Amaziah, who sought to banish Amos from "clean" land, will himself die in an "unclean" land, emphasizing how his own actions have defiled his connection to God's people. This is more than just exile; it's a spiritual separation, a punishment for silencing God's word.
Therefore thus says the LORD: “‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided up with a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.’”
English Standard Version (ESV)
The priest Amaziah has just accused the prophet Amos of treason and ordered him to stop prophesying in Israel. In response, Amos declares that God’s judgment is coming, not just on the nation, but specifically on Amaziah and his family. This prophecy details the complete destruction of Amaziah’s household and the division of his land, culminating in the exile of all of Israel.
Imagine the worst possible outcome of war, not just for yourself, but for your family. This verse paints a brutal picture of divine judgment, detailing personal tragedies that strike at the very heart of Amaziah’s life.
Amos doesn't just pronounce general doom; he lays out specific, devastating consequences for Amaziah and his family. The prophecy includes:
Why would dying in a 'polluted land' be such a severe curse? This wasn't just about geography; it was about God's presence—or lack thereof.

The concept of a 'polluted' or 'unclean' land is crucial here. For ancient Israel, the land of Canaan was uniquely consecrated because God’s presence dwelled there in a special way.
Amos heard accusations from Amaziah, and now God's judgment echoes those very words back. What does this repetition reveal about God's resolve?
Amos 7:11 quotes Amaziah saying, '...and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.' In verse 17, God's judgment repeats these exact words: 'and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.' This isn't just poetic symmetry; it's a powerful theological statement:
