This verse marks a devastating turning point in Israel's history. The northern kingdom, which had a long and often rebellious journey, finally met its end.
The Siege and Capture
King Hoshea of Israel tried to play games with both Egypt and Assyria, refusing to pay tribute to Assyria and instead aligning with Egypt. This was a fatal mistake. The powerful Assyrian empire, under King Shalmaneser V (and later Sargon II, who completed the conquest), laid siege to Samaria, the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel.
The siege lasted for three long years, a testament to the Israelites' desperate resistance. But in the ninth year of Hoshea's reign (around 722 BC), the walls finally fell. Samaria was conquered, and the heart of the northern kingdom was crushed.
