The fervor behind their cry, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!", wasn't just about religious devotion; it was a desperate defense of their livelihood. Paul's message that idols aren't gods directly threatened the craftsmen's businesses, turning their outrage into a unified chant to protect their profits and the established order.
When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s companions in travel.
