This commandment isn't just about avoiding statues; it's about who holds the ultimate trust and reliance of your heart. "Before me" literally means "in my presence" or "alongside me," highlighting that no allegiance or dependence, even in your thoughts, can be shared with anything else. Anything you turn to with ultimate confidence and hope, more than God, has become your "other god."
“You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
English Standard Version (ESV)
This commandment is the very first spoken by God to the Israelites after their miraculous liberation from Egypt. It serves as the foundational principle for their relationship with Him, directly addressing the polytheistic cultures surrounding them. The words are spoken individually to each Israelite, emphasizing personal commitment to God, not just national compliance, and setting the stage for all subsequent laws that build upon this exclusive devotion.
Did God really mean 'you' when he spoke to a whole nation? Absolutely!
Notice how God addresses Israel in Exodus 20:3: 'You shall have no other gods...' He uses the singular 'you.' This wasn't just a national decree; it was a deeply personal call to each individual. God wasn't interested in a collective, impersonal allegiance. He demanded that each person standing there, and by extension, each person throughout history, make a conscious choice to set their loyalty with Him alone. This transforms the commandment from a distant rule into a direct, personal challenge.
What does it mean for God to have no other gods 'before me'?
The phrase 'before me' (or 'before my face') is packed with meaning. It doesn't just mean 'in addition to me' or 'beside me.' It implies that any other god would be set up in God's presence, in His very sight. This highlights God's absolute claim and His intolerance of rivals. It's a declaration that He alone is God, and any other worship is not merely wrong, but an affront to Him. He watches, He sees, and He demands exclusive devotion. This isn't just about avoiding bad behavior; it's about honoring God's rightful place.
Is it just about outward rituals, or does God look deeper?
This first commandment cuts straight to the core: our trust and deepest affections. The commentaries reveal that 'having other gods' isn't limited to bowing down to statues. It's about where your heart truly rests its confidence and finds its ultimate satisfaction. If you place your ultimate hope, trust, or desire in anything other than God – be it money, success, relationships, or even your own abilities – that thing becomes an idol. God seeks your complete inner allegiance, not just outward compliance. He wants to be the source of your strength, your hope, and your joy.

Matthew 4:10When Jesus is tempted by Satan, He quotes Deuteronomy 6:13 (which is itself based on Exodus 20:3) saying, 'Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “’Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”' This shows the enduring relevance of the first commandment's principle.

pulpitExodus 20:3: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
Verse 3. - Thou shalt have. The use of the second person singular is remarkable when a covenant was being made with the people (Exodus 19:5). The form indicated that each individual of the nation was addressed severally, and was required himself to obey the law, a mere general national obedience being insufficient. No one can fail to see how much the commands gain in force, through all time, by being thus addressed to the individual consci…

Thou shalt have no other gods before me - אלהים אחרים elohim acherim, no strange gods - none that thou art not acquainted with, none who has not given thee such proofs of his power and godhead as I have done in delivering thee from the Egyptians, dividing the Red Sea, bringing water out of the rock, quails into the desert, manna from heaven to feed thee, and the pillar of cloud to direct, enlighten, and shield thee. By these miracles God…
