The verse doesn't just describe the creation of an idol; it subtly highlights the absurdity by starting with the raw material: a tree from the forest. This emphasizes that the object of worship is nothing more than something pulled from the earth, completely dependent on human hands for its form, and utterly devoid of any inherent divine power.
for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jeremiah is speaking about the religious practices of the surrounding pagan nations, contrasting their idolatry with the true God of Israel. He exposes the utter foolishness of worshipping idols, beginning with how they are made—simply by cutting down a tree and shaping it with tools. This sets the stage for a powerful argument demonstrating that these manufactured objects can neither help nor harm, unlike the living, all-powerful God.
Jeremiah calls the practices of surrounding nations 'vanity.' What exactly does he mean by 'customs,' and why are they so empty?
Jeremiah uses the Hebrew word often translated as 'customs' or 'statutes' to refer to the religious practices and established institutions of the pagan nations. These weren't just casual habits, but deeply ingrained religious rites and beliefs that the people followed. However, the prophet declares them to be 'vanity' – meaningless, empty, and ultimately worthless. This isn't just a casual observation; it's a bold statement that these deeply held traditions have no true power or substance because they are not rooted in the truth of the one true God.
The verse dramatically shifts from 'customs' to a tree being cut down. How does this illustration expose the hollowness of idol worship?
Jeremiah vividly illustrates the 'vanity' of these customs by showing the origin of idols. They start as ordinary trees in the forest, solid and natural, but then are cut down by human hands using an axe. A craftsman then works them, shaping them into an image. The point is stark: these objects of worship are entirely the product of human labor and ingenuity. They are made from something that grew naturally, something that couldn't even save itself from the woodcutter's axe. To worship something made by human hands from a mere tree highlights the ultimate powerlessness and absurdity of idolatry.

Verse 3. - The customs of the people. "People" should, as usual, be corrected into peoples - the heathen nations are referred to. The Hebrew has "the statutes;" but the Authorized Version is substantially right, customs having a force as of iron in Eastern countries. It seems to be implied that the "customs" are of religious origin (setup. 2 King…
