Paul doesn't just mention suffering; he highlights its relentlessness and its internal aspect. The "fighting without and fear within" reveals that true hardship isn't just external struggles, but the deep-seated anxiety and doubt that can plague us even when things look like they're going well. It's a powerful reminder that spiritual warfare is just as much about the battles in our hearts as it is about the challenges we face outwardly.
For even when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turn—fighting without and fear within. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, and not only by his coming but also by the comfort with which he was comforted by you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul and his companions had just arrived in Macedonia, feeling exhausted and under immense pressure. They faced constant external troubles, with opposition and conflict from all sides, and internal anxieties stemming from their difficult circumstances and the situation back in Corinth. This verse sets the stage for understanding the deep relief and joy Paul experienced when Titus finally rejoined him with good news from the Corinthian church, as described in the verses that follow.
Paul and his companions didn't find smooth sailing when they arrived in Macedonia. Their journey was marked by struggle, both from external pressures and internal anxieties.
Paul's description in 2 Corinthians 7:5 paints a vivid picture of relentless hardship. He uses strong language to convey that their arrival wasn't a relief, but the beginning of a new set of challenges.
External Battles:
'Fighting without' points to the intense opposition they faced from people, false teachers, and difficult circumstances. This wasn't a gentle disagreement; it was a hostile environment.
Internal Struggles:
'Fear within' reveals the personal toll these battles took. It wasn't just about outward conflict; it was also about the psychological and emotional strain, the anxiety and uncertainty that accompanied their ministry.
Even in the midst of exhaustion and fear, Paul's ministry continued. What sustained him and his team through such overwhelming pressure?
While 2 Corinthians 7:5 details the difficulties, the broader context of Paul's letters reveals that these experiences didn't break him because of God's enduring presence and strength.
Resting in God's Power:
Paul understood that true rest wasn't the absence of struggle, but the presence of God within the struggle. The 'no rest' for their bodies was met by a deeper, spiritual rest found in their reliance on the Almighty.

Resilience Through Faith:
Their 'fear within' was countered by a steadfast faith in God's promises and His ultimate sovereignty. This faith didn't eliminate fear, but it provided a foundation that fear couldn't topple.
