Why would people risk everything? Paul connects this constant danger directly to the resurrection. What’s so important about that one event?
The Resurrection: Worth Dying For?
Paul's argument hinges on the centrality of the resurrection. If Jesus didn't rise from the dead, then:
- The Preaching is Futile: Their message, the very core of their witness, would be meaningless. All the suffering would be for nothing.
- Faith is Useless: Belief in a resurrected Christ would be misplaced, a delusion. The foundation of their hope would crumble.
- We are Most Pitied: Instead of being commended for their conviction, they would be seen as fools, desperately clinging to a lie.
This is why they faced danger hourly – because they staked their entire existence, their reputation, their lives, on the reality of the resurrection.
