Paul’s question isn't just a rhetorical plea about the hardships faced by believers; it's a pointed reminder that their very identity and the truth of their faith are constantly under threat. The danger isn't just physical peril, but the existential risk of their witness being meaningless if the resurrection of Jesus isn't real.
Why are we in danger every hour? I protest, brothers, by my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die every day! What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul's defending the resurrection of Jesus and, by extension, the hope Christians have in their own future resurrection. He’s arguing passionately against those who deny this foundational truth, pointing out the absurd consequences of their disbelief for his own ministry and the faith of believers. This question bursts out of his frustration and the genuine danger he and other apostles face daily because of their unwavering belief in a resurrected Christ.
Paul doesn't shy away from the real danger faced by believers. What risks was he talking about?
In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul is building a case for the resurrection of Jesus and its implications. He's just laid out the core of the gospel message (verses 1-4) and affirmed the resurrection based on eyewitness accounts (verses 5-11). Now, he's addressing potential doubts and the reality of living as a follower of the resurrected Christ.
If life is so dangerous, why keep going? Paul's answer lies in the ultimate truth he's defending.
Paul's rhetorical question, "Why are we in danger every hour?" is immediately followed by his powerful assertion: "I swear by your joy which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily." This isn't about masochism; it's about priorities.
