We often think of love as something pure and good. But what happens when 'love' leads us down a path God has warned against?
The very beginning of 1 Kings 11 sets a somber tone. Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, starts his reign with such promise. Yet, this verse reveals his critical error: 'King Solomon loved many foreign women.'
More Than Just Affection
This wasn't just about having a diverse group of friends. The Bible consistently warns against intermarrying with the surrounding nations. These unions were forbidden not primarily because of ethnicity, but because of idolatry. These women worshipped other gods, and their presence threatened the spiritual purity of Israel and Solomon's own devotion to the Lord.
Solomon's 'love' here wasn't a true, godly affection that respects God's boundaries. It was a dangerous entanglement that would have devastating consequences.
