Nehemiah 13:23-27

What does Nehemiah 13:23-27 mean?

Nehemiah doesn't just see these men; he sees that they "had married wives," which the Hebrew actually suggests more strongly: they "had settled with them as wives." This isn't just about the wedding ceremony, but about these relationships being established and living within the community, profoundly impacting the next generation.

In those days also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people. And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? Among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin. Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”

What Nehemiah 13:23-27 means

Having just dealt with the desecration of the Sabbath, Nehemiah now turns his attention to another serious violation he observed among the people: intermarriage with foreign women. This verse marks the beginning of his forceful confrontation with Jews who had married wives from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab, groups explicitly forbidden by the Law due to their ungodly influence. This transgression was a direct contradiction to the solemn covenant the people had recently renewed, and it threatened the spiritual purity of the community.

The Weight of 'Us' and 'Them'

Nehemiah was rebuilding more than just walls; he was restoring a people's distinct identity. What does it mean to belong?

Nehemiah encounters Jews who have married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. These were not just any foreign nations; they were historically hostile and religiously divergent peoples. The law strictly prohibited intermarriage with many of these groups to protect Israel's unique covenant relationship with God and to prevent the infiltration of idolatrous practices.

Protecting a Sacred Trust

This wasn't about ethnic purity for its own sake, but about preserving a spiritual heritage. These marriages threatened to dilute the covenant community's commitment to Yahweh and pull them back into the surrounding paganism. Nehemiah saw this as a direct threat to the very foundation of their restored identity as God's chosen people.

Nehemiah's Watchful Eye

When Nehemiah saw these marriages, it wasn't a casual glance. He was actively observing and assessing the community's faithfulness.

The phrase 'saw I Jews' implies more than just a passing observation. It suggests Nehemiah was actively engaged, patrolling, and monitoring the community's adherence to the covenant renewal and the laws they had recently reaffirmed. This verse catches Nehemiah in the act of leadership – he isn't just issuing decrees; he is present and observant.

Leadership in Action

His vigilance extended to other areas too, like the profanation of the Sabbath (mentioned in verses 15-22). This shows Nehemiah's comprehensive concern for the people's obedience and the sanctity of their communal life. He saw these mixed marriages as a significant transgression, a 'most flagrant kind' of sin according to commentary, undermining the very restoration project he was leading.
