Zechariah 11:10-14

What does Zechariah 11:10-14 mean?

The staff "Beauty" represents not just God's favor and protection, but a protective restraint He placed on other nations regarding Israel. By breaking it, God signifies He's no longer actively preventing other peoples from inflicting their will upon the chosen nation. This action dissolves a unique kind of covenant, one with the nations that had kept them from harming Israel, effectively opening the door for their judgment.

And I took my staff Favor, and I broke it, annulling the covenant that I had made with all the peoples. So it was annulled on that day, and the sheep traders, who were watching me, knew that it was the word of the LORD. Then I said to them, “If it seems good to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” And they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of silver. Then the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD, to the potter. Then I broke my second staff Union, annulling the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.

What Zechariah 11:10-14 means

The prophet Zechariah is acting out a symbolic prophecy concerning God's relationship with His people. After being commanded to shepherd a flock destined for slaughter, he takes two staffs representing God's favor and unity with Israel, but then deliberately breaks the staff named "Beauty." This act signifies God annulling His covenant, withdrawing His protection, and severing the special relationship He had with the people, especially in light of their rejection of Him and His Messiah.

When God's Favor is Withdrawn

Zechariah picks up a staff, but instead of caring for a flock, he breaks it. What does this act of destruction signify?

In Zechariah 11, the prophet is instructed by God to act out a judgment against Israel. He takes two staffs: one named 'Favor' (or 'Beauty') and another named 'Bands.' The breaking of the 'Favor' staff is a powerful symbolic act. It represents God withdrawing His special grace, protection, and the blessings associated with His covenant relationship with Israel. While this covenant was originally established for the well-being of His people, their persistent rejection of Him and His ways meant that this favor could no longer stand. The staff, symbolizing this precious relationship, is broken asunder to declare that the covenant is annulled from God's side due to their unfaithfulness. It signifies a profound turning point where God's active protection and preferential treatment are rescinded.

The Covenant's Dual Meaning

The text mentions a covenant 'with all the peoples.' Does this mean all nations, or just Israel?

The phrase 'all the peoples' in Zechariah 11:10 is rich with meaning. While primarily referring to the tribes of Israel—God's chosen people with whom He made the Mosaic and Abrahamic covenants—it can also encompass the broader sense of 'nations.' In one interpretation, the broken staff signifies the end of God's protective 'covenant' with the surrounding nations, a divine restraint that previously prevented them from utterly destroying Israel. When this restraint is lifted, other nations would be free to inflict judgment. Another perspective is that God's covenant relationship, symbolized by the 'Beauty' staff, was intended to be a light to the nations through Israel. By breaking the staff, God signals the termination of this specific, preferential covenantal arrangement with Israel, paving the way for the Gospel message to be extended to all peoples, Jew and Gentile alike, through Christ.
