You know Christ is with you, but what does that mean for your physical body, which is still subject to death?
This verse highlights a powerful paradox in the Christian life. Even when Christ is truly present within us by His Spirit, our physical bodies remain "dead because of sin." This doesn't mean our bodies are worthless or completely devoid of God's attention. Instead, it acknowledges the ongoing reality of sin's effects in this life – including mortality. Think of it as an admission: yes, our bodies will die. This death is a consequence of the fallen world we live in, a world still groaning under the weight of sin.
However, this isn't the end of the story. The statement "the body is dead" is immediately contrasted with another truth: "the Spirit is life." This means that while our physical bodies are marked for death, our inner selves, our spirits, are alive in God.
