Paul just explained how God's grace overflows even where sin is rampant. So, what's the logical next step? Some might think it's a green light to keep sinning!
A Dangerous Inference
Paul anticipates a serious misunderstanding of the Gospel. After he declared that "where sin abounded, grace abounded all the more" (Romans 5:20), some might have thought: "Great! If my sin makes God's grace look even better, then let's just keep sinning so that His grace can shine even brighter!"
This line of reasoning sounds logical on the surface, but it twists God's incredible mercy into a license for further rebellion. It's like saying, "A doctor's medicine is so good, I should keep getting sick so I can take more of it!" It completely misses the purpose of the medicine – to heal.
Paul calls this a "dangerous inference" and immediately shuts it down. He's not saying God's grace is limited; he's saying its purpose isn't to encourage sin, but to conquer it.
