Before we could even think about fixing ourselves, God stepped in. What does it truly mean to be 'without strength' and 'ungodly'?
Paul confronts us with our pre-Christ condition. We weren't just a little weak; we were utterly incapable, 'without strength' (asthenōn). This isn't about physical weakness, but a deep inability to save ourselves, to please God, or even to want to please Him. Think of it like being paralyzed – you can't even lift a finger to help yourself.
And then there's 'ungodly' (asebōn). This isn't just about not going to church. It's a fundamental lack of reverence, a turning away from God, a life lived without regard for Him. It's an active opposition, a state of hostility towards the very One who created us.
Paul lays this out starkly: we were both helpless and hostile. This isn't a comfortable picture, but it’s the essential starting point for understanding the magnitude of God’s love.
