Romans 4:13-14

The promise wasn't about Abraham earning his place by following rules, but about God counting his simple trust as a life-giving righteousness. It highlights that "heir of the world" wasn't about earthly possessions, but about a far greater inheritance found through faith in God's promises, not human effort.
For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is arguing that Abraham's righteousness and the promises God made to him were based on faith, not adherence to the Law. He has already established Abraham was declared righteous by believing God before circumcision or the Mosaic Law existed. This verse specifically refutes the idea that the grand promise of Abraham being heir of the world (and his offspring inheriting it) was earned through following any kind of legal code.
What does it mean to inherit the 'world'? This wasn't just about land, but a vast, spiritual inheritance connected to Abraham's 'seed'.
Paul highlights the promise made to Abraham: that he would be an 'heir of the world'. This promise wasn't limited to a physical land but extended to a universal dominion.
The promise wasn't earned through rules or rituals. So, what's the difference between law and faith's righteousness?
The core of this verse is the contrast between inheriting God's promise 'through the law' versus 'through the righteousness of faith'.

The promise to Abraham was made long before the Mosaic Law existed, and it was received by faith. This historical context clarifies that the promise, and its ultimate fulfillment in Christ, are not tied to legal observance but to a trust in God's faithfulness, a truth powerfully illustrated by the experiences of Israel throughout their history.

God's Promise to Abraham
God makes a foundational promise to Abraham, outlining a vast inheritance for him and his descendants, emphasizing that this promise is received by faith, not through adherence to any law. This covenant lays the groundwork for Abraham's spiritual legacy.
c. 1446 BC
The Mosaic Law Given
The Law, including the Ten Commandments and other statutes, is given to the Israelites through Moses at Mount Sinai. This event establishes a legal framework for the people of God, but importantly, it occurs centuries after God's initial promise to Abraham.
c. 1400-400 BC
Period of the Judges and Monarchy
Following the Exodus, Israel experiences periods of both faithfulness and unfaithfulness under the Law, leading to cycles of deliverance and oppression. This era highlights the inherent limitations of the Law in securing God's promises for a sinful people.
c. 722 BC
Fall of the Northern Kingdom (Israel)
The Assyrian Empire conquers and deports the northern tribes of Israel. This event demonstrates the consequences of breaking God's covenant and underscores that adherence to the Law alone did not guarantee possession of God's promises.
586 BC
Fall of Jerusalem and Babylonian Exile
The Babylonians conquer Judah, destroy Jerusalem and the Temple, and exile many Israelites. This catastrophic event further illustrates that the Law and religious privilege did not shield the people from judgment.

Paul's Missionary Journeys and Letters
The Apostle Paul travels extensively, spreading the Gospel and establishing churches among both Jews and Gentiles. He writes letters, including Romans, to explain how the promise to Abraham is fulfilled through faith in Christ for all people, regardless of their relationship to the Mosaic Law.
This passage directly shows Abraham believing God's word about his numerous descendants, which God then counted to him as righteousness, mirroring the core idea of the promise coming through faith, not law.
Galatians 3:16-18Paul echoes this argument in Galatians, explaining how the promise to Abraham and his 'seed' (Christ and believers) predates the law and cannot be annulled or replaced by it, reinforcing that inheritance is by promise through faith.
Hebrews 11:8-10This text highlights Abraham's faith in God's promise of an inheritance, not just in the land of Canaan but in a heavenly city, emphasizing that his hope was based on God's design, not on earthly laws or efforts.
Galatians 3:29This verse directly connects believers in Christ to Abraham's 'seed' and heirs according to the promise, showing how the inheritance is now realized through faith in Christ, transcending any law-based claim.
